Homework
We believe the “homework” is a sharing process – home with school and school with home. We also have a responsibility to make a positive effect on the child’s attitude towards school and education.
Initially pupils are encouraged to read and share books with their parents as often as possible, as the child becomes a more fluent reader, parents can encourage silent reading and monitor their child’s progress through discussion.
All pupils have a reading record (Pink Link Book) in which children, staff and parents can comment.
As children progress through school, they will be expected to practice and learn number bonds, tables and spellings on a weekly basis. Parents can work with their child on these through games, practice and experiences in the home.
In addition, from time to time children are asked to investigate or find information about things relating to their work in school either at home, through the library or using ICT. Again parents can support their child by asking questions.
Homework is very important, children are expected to work hard at school, however, they need the opportunity to “unwind” at home and have time to broaden their experiences through other activities e.g. brownies, cubs, sport, dance and clubs.
A list is attached showing what each year group are expected to do, a copy will also be attached to the Pink Links Books for your reference.
It should be noted that by the time children reach year 4 they will be ready to start using a homework diary, which helps prepare them for moving up to middle school. This will be introduced at the end of the Spring Term and more details will be given to pupils and parents in a separate letter.
